Artist Research

Zelda Zinn

"Zelda Zinn was born in Louisiana, and grew up in a big family in Texas, back when it was a blue state. Drawing and dreaming up contraptions were early pleasures. She fell in love with photography when she was 10 years old, having taken a magical photo of her best friend with a huge gum bubble covering her face. She attended an arts high school before studying the classics at St. John’s College. For grad school, she attended the University of New Mexico, receiving an MA and an MFA in photography. Having taught photography for many years, she loves to make photo enthusiasts of her students. She views photography as one of many tools available to artists, and likes to get her hands dirty with other media such as printing, painting, and making sculpture. She was fortunate to be awarded artist’s residencies to the Santa Fe Art Institute and Vermont Studio Center. Both have had a profound impact on her art making. She continues to be amazed by the worlds of nature and the imagination."

Gerhard Clausing

"Gerhard (Gerry) Clausing was already fascinated by photography as a youngster, initially using a simple Bilora Boy camera, and then acquiring a keener vision and better equipment as time went by.

His images are metaphorical; he invites the viewer to participate in the creative process by inspiring imaginative reactions to his images. Tension, distortions, and ambiguous juxtapositions ask the viewers to find their own personal meanings. The images hover between the conscious and the unconscious, the real and the unreal, with a touch of the surreal.

Gerry earned a Ph.D. in literature and linguistics at UC Berkeley. While on his academic journey culminating in a tenured full professorhip at USC, his interest in photography grew alongside his numerous academic achievements. Newspapers including the Swiss Tages-Anzeiger and book  publishers, from Houghton Mifflin to Heinle/Thompson, showcased a variety of his images in Sunday supplements and university textbooks, including three of his own innovative educational programs (Deutsch natürlich!, Interaktion, Übergänge).

Southern California inspired Gerry to further his visual studies at Otis Art Institute, Brooks Institute, and the Los Angeles Center of Photography.  He used his images in his administrative activities as well as in his teaching, especially in his drama performance courses, providing motivation and feedback for his students. Gerry has received encouragement and mentoring from several outstanding photographers, especially from Gerd Ludwig, David Alan Harvey, Douglas Kirkland, Mary Ellen Mark, Peter Bialobrzeski, Duane Michals, Julia Dean, Ken Merfeld, and Aline Smithson.

Recently leaving academia, Gerry is focusing full time on his photography. His images have appeared online at The Los Angeles Times(latimes.com), The LA Weekly (laweekly.com), Review Plays(reviewplays.com), Curve Wire (curvewire.com), Diffraction Phenomenon, and Lenscratch (lenscratch.com). He has won awards in competitions and his work has been displayed on the B&W Magazinewebsite, Black and White Spider Awards, and in the PhotoPlace Gallery (Vermont), Kiernan Gallery, Julia Dean Gallery (Venice and Hollywood), Perfect Exposure Gallery (Los Angeles), and Art Basel Miami, among others."

Lori Vrba

"I was raised in a small, back-woods Southeast Texas town.  I did not grow up with an exposure to art.  I did not have an uncle with a darkroom.  I did not hold a camera until I was a grown woman.  I am a self-taught artist committed to film and traditional wet darkroom printing.  I work intuitively in every creative element of my medium with an acute awareness of what and who has come before me.  My life experiences have brought me to this place where I find myself overwhelmed with the drive to make photographs about who I am...what moves me, what I feel inside, what I believe to be sacred and enduring.  I make pictures to challenge, calm, excite and satisfy my mind and heart.  I share my work in hopes of leaving some permanent, telling mark on the world...that I Was Here."
